Today the St. Mikes men faced off against Durham for the second time in the last week. After an epic match last week, this one was sure to be a great exhibition of football.

Durham got off to a quick start with a goal within the first minute but St. Mikes clawed their way back. Led by Ciaran O'Driscoll, the men were up 6 points at halftime and looked to have the game in the bag. However, the talented Durham squad came back and soon were up by a point. The game went back and forth and the score was tied with time running out. It was with about 7 minutes left that the turning point came. Ciaran Brady was subbed out for Tony Doyle. Doyler made two quick fouls and then Mikes got the ball back. The ball was kicked in towards the Durham goal and Doyle punched it in for a goal which ended up being the winning score. The final score was 3-11 to 2-11 for Mikes.

Congratulations to the men who move on to play the Toronto Gaels in the championship semifinal tomorrow at 3:30 at Centennial Park.

Championship First Round [Results]

On Saturday, the St. Mike's ladies faced their first challenge of Championship play in their game against Durham. With many key players missing in action the girls faced a major hurdle in advancing to the next round. At the beginning of the first half, the heat caused both teams to struggle. However, the Durham ladies got their act together faster then the Mike's and the half ended with a commanding lead by Durham and the Mike's ladies scoreless. The second half proved be much more competitive with excellent show of skill by both teams. Unfortunately, the lead by Durham proved to be too far to catch and the St. Mike's ladies faced their final defeat of the season. Although the ladies aren't content with this outcome, they recognize this year to be a growing year for their squad with many lessons learned and memories made.

Needless to say, they are anxiously awaiting the Powerscreen tournament where they can prove once again that the St. Mike's Ladies are more then just a bunch of pretty faces but DAMN GOOD FOOTBALLERS!!

In the next game the St. Mike's men took on a tough squad from Durham in what was arguably the best game of football played at Centennial Park in 5 years.. The men were determined to better their efforts from the first meeting with Durham which had resulted in a loss. The first half  saw a slow start from both sides, particularly St. Mikes, and Durham's lead was as high as 7 points at one point. However, the men made a surge in the last 15 minutes of the first half and closed to gap to 2 points. The second half started with a bang as Edwin Walsh, St. Mikes player of the game, setup a point and closed the gap to 1 point. Soon enough St. Mikes had the lead and were looking like they were going to win the game. However Durham stormed back and tied it up again where the score remained for the rest of the game.

The replay will be on Saturday August 18 at Centennial Park at 7pm. Make sure you are there for what will be a game for the ages.

The Toronto GAA Championship has arrived. After some very entertaining league play, the first round of the championship has finally come. Both the St. Mikes ladies and men will face Durham in what promises to be two very exciting and competitive games. At 5:15 on Saturday the ladies will try to defeat Durham for the first time this season. The girls have been working very hard over the past few weeks and this match promises to be a cracker.

Following the ladies, the men take to the field facing Durham for the second time this season. Their first meeting, a loss, was a great game and the men are ready for the strong Durham squad this time. This match promises to be one for the ages.

Once again, the games will be on Saturday August 11 at 5:15 and 6:30, ladies and mens respectively, at Centennial Park.

Yesterday was the mens league semifinal. Mikes were taking on Vincents in what always is a hard fought match. In what looked more like a championship match it was tight through the first half. However, with a little over 10 minutes left St. Mikes buried a goal putting them up 7 points. Vincents clawed their way back to within 2 points but St. Mikes hung on for the victory. This put them through to the league final against Durham.

The St. Mikes ladies were playing Cusacks in the league semifinal. St. Mikes put up a good fight but once again the high intensity game against Cusacks did not go as planned. The girls managed to make some great plays but unfortunately still came up short. With championship quickly approaching they hope to focus on their strengths and eradicate their weaknesses.

UPDATE: The mens league final was not played due to an appeal that is being processed by the Toronto GAA board. More info to follow.
