Mikes Do The Double
Written by Conor O Muiri
Tuesday, 31 August 2010
This past weekend, the senior men and ladies played in the Championship finals in their respective leagues.

To start, the ladies took on Ottawa in their third meeting of the season. They split the league meetings, and with Ottawa playing limited games this year, the girls weren't sure what to expect. After a tough start to the game, the girls took control, and broke out in the second half to pull away from Ottawa, winning their second consecutive Championship by a score of 4-13 to 2-04.

After the ladies' big win, the men took to the field in the senior final against Durham. After a tough first half that saw the men down 0-04 to 0-03, the men turned things around in the second half. It was a tough day for scoring for both teams, but the Mikes backs were able to hold Durham to only 2 points in the second half, leading to a 0-12 to 0-06 win.

Congratulations to both teams on their big wins this weekend. The club would like to thank all the supporters and people who made this all possible this year. The men will be playing in the Powerscreen Sevens this Saturday, while the ladies will put the boots away until next March when training will start up again. Check back soon for Sevens information.

Sunday marks the Toronto GAA Championship Finals for 2010 and St. Mikes will be playing in the ladies and senior mens. After a big win against Cusacks on Sunday (0-13 to 0-02), the ladies will look to win back to back championships as they take on the Ottawa Gaels.

After beating Ottawa on Sunday, the St. Mikes senior men will take on Durham in this years final, looking to improve on the second place finish they had last year.

All in all, it should be a great Sunday at the Park. Come out and support the club!

Weekend Scores

This past weekend was a club weekend, with all 3 teams in action and a BBQ afterwards. In the ladies game, Brampton could not field, but the girls played anyways, beating Brampton by a large margin. Next the senior men took on Vincents, looking to clinch the league. With a load of injuries, the boys knew this one would be a challenege. After the first half, both sides were level and it was clear that the game would come down to the wire. After a slow, back and forth start to the second half, Vincents pulled away with a goal, putting them up 5 points. However, Mikes fought back with a goal in the last 2 minutes, but it was too little too late, as Vincents won 1-12 to 2-07. Finally, in the third game of the day, the St. Mikes B team beat a strong Pats side, 3-08 to 0-13.

After the junior game, all club members gathered to have a BBQ and a few drinks together. It was great to see all the club out, young and old, players and supporters, to enjoy a day at the park. Thanks to all who came out, and a special thanks to those who volunteered their time to help BBQ, distribute drinks, etc. It was definitely a great day for the club.

Next week the senior team is in action against Durham. The ladies will be playing tomorrow night in Scarborough against Durham as well.

Ottawa Weekend

Last weekend the club travelled to Ottawa to play two games and spend a night on the town afterwards. The ladies played first, and had no idea what to expect from Ottawa, who hadn't played a game since opening weekend in Toronto. After a very slow start for both teams, the ladies finally broke out and beat Ottawa 1-13 to 3-03. The senior men played next against a strong Ottawa squad. A solid, but not great, effort from the men gave them another win on the season, 2-09 to 0-06.

This coming weekend sees all 3 Mikes teams in action. The ladies will play Brampton at 12, the seniors will play Vincents at 2:30, and the juniors play Pats immediately after. The club will also be having a BBQ starting at 3:00pm. There will be burgers, steak, salads, and drinks, so come out and support the club and get something to eat!
